"When considering the question should we remember? it is very important to firstly ask, has any victim forgotten? Could they ever forget? Secondly we should ask, who wants to forget? Who benefits when the atrocities stay silent in the past?"

(Roberto Cabrera - Guatemalan human rights activist)

About us

Mthwakazi Action Group on Genocide in Matabeleland and Midlands (MAGGEMM)

Who are we?

MAGGEMM is a not-for-profit group of survivors and victims of the 1980s Gukurahundi genocide in Zimbabwe. MAGGEMM is not a political party and its actions must not be viewed in that way.

We intend, through direct action, advocacy, academic research and other approaches, to;

(i)Complete a thorough report of the Gukurahundi genocide to supplement the excellent but incomplete job done by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe (CCJP) in 1997.

(ii) Explain to all members of the regional and international communities the enormity of the Gukurahundi genocide and its effects on the people of Matabeleland and Midlands.

(iii) Sustain a campaign that will, as part of a permanent solution, seek legal redress for the victims of Gukurahundi.

(iv)Lobby Zimbabwean government and politicians to account for past human rights abuses.

(v) Petition the government of Zimbabwe to release the Dumbutshena and Chihambakwe commission reports.

(vi) Set up museums, memorial centres, monuments and scholarships as a way of remembering those who perished.

We also have a research and conference programme centred around the four themes listed below and welcome any suggestions for papers.

Theme 1: VIOLENCE AND MEMORY:
Education and history - is time a healer?

Theme 2: THE RIGHT TO KNOW:
Public Order or Public Interest?

Theme 3: JUSTICE AND PEACE:
Are they mutually exclusive or are trade-offs necessary?

Theme 4: THE ROLE OF MEDIA:
Is pen mightier than sword?
