Message : I recall MacKay Nleya was picked up by the Five Brigade in Plumtree(Tokwana Area)and sverely beaten up to such an extent that they made him their informer who would be telling them of all ex-ZPRA combatants in the area. Him being an ex-combatant as well just gave out the names of his close friends or mates whom he socialised with. Two brothers Aleck and Salani Moyo were picked up from Bulawayo together with Chris Ndlovu alias Mgambayi and were taken into Gukurahundi custody. They were taken to as far as Khame Huwana where they were tortured and forced to confess hiding weapons.The Moyo brothers were tied behind a landrover and paraded in the local area as dissidents. They were finaally shot and buried in shallow graves in the Khame area. Chris survived the assault but has up to today a paralysed hand. I was so close to these guys when we grew up and considering that they were all ex-combatants who were trying to upgrade their education in Bulawayo when they were picked up and only to be buried like rogue dogs in shallow graves raises my hostility index towards the perpetrators.Siya bakhumbula abafowethu.

This is a serious issue, and it deserves our serious attention, some nations are not shy to remember their own, last week i visited a church in the northen parts of England and i was surprised to find a shrine built inside the church for those who died during the 1st and 2nd world wars. We have a right to remember our own in our own unique ways, we have a right to mourn our own in our own special ways. We were killed for mourning our own, we were never given an opportunity to cry and to mourn our own, we were never allowed to decently bury our own. Let it be known that we have a right to heal ourselves, we have a right to remember our own.

Message : As I read the message board, my heart goes out to all that were victimised by Gugurahunde and to their friends and families who are left behind to bear the memories, trauma and hurt. Trauma at such levels can not be written off or forgotten. It is important to process the experiences, the memories and traumas in order to set ourselves free. Forgiveness (letting go) is a necessary part, but can not be done without first processing the experience. Forgiveness does not mean accepting & condoning the perpetrators actions as right or being disloyal to our loved ones who died, but it is a way of setting ones self free and living in the here and now. Forgiving gives us permission to live to love and be loved by our friends & families who are still alive. I am grateful for the opportunity to have this space and forum to start to process this experience with other people.
